With a great house reef in front of the diveshop and a couple of turtles living in the bay, Gapang beach is a perfect place for snorkeling and long relaxed shore dives.

Gapang Beach

Situated in Pulau Weh or Weh Island –  a small island off the northern tip of Sumatra. The northern most point of the Indonesian archipelago is known as kilometer zero,or KMZero – Gapang Beach is an unique beach, with white sand halfway around the bay, surrounded by large overhanging trees; the ‘Gapang’ trees. So you can choose to sit on the beach in the sun, or in the shade of these grand old trees.

Only 15 to 30 minutes drive from the town of Sabang you will be able to enjoying the beautiful scenery of the beach. From the ferry port at Balohan, Gapang beach can be reached by car in 45 minutes.

The ferry from Banda Aceh (leaving from Ulee Lhee ferry port) to Pulau Weh takes around 45-60 minutes if you take the fast one (Rp 60,000 – Rp 80,000 one way), and 2 hours by the slow one (around Rp 15,000 one way).

The beach with a beautiful white sand and shaped like a bay, located by the dock on the west and black rocks in the east.

Gapang Beach

Best known by tourists for its world class snorkeling and diving, the sea around Gapang Beach offers some of the best diving in the world. Along the coast, dozens of dive resorts and a ride home standing in a township which has never forgotten its visitors.

Yes indeed, this is a backpacker’s paradise. For just a couple bucks a night, a little shack on the beach was yours – with all-you-can-eat dinner included!

It was about as bare-bones as you can get – single rooms with a thin stained matress on the floor – but the price was right, and there’s nothing around except the ocean on one side and the jungle on the other. No hustlers or souvenir hawkers patrolling the beaches.

Well, should you one of the most busy people out there, relaxing on this beach is definetely something special you can’t find every time. Enjoy your ‘me time’ on this beach and get ready to escape from the hustle and bustle of your daily work. [rs]
